Your freind right? yeah okay. . . .one the best ways to get thier attention and even more is to pick something they are good at and use it. For example if they know a lot about cars, ask them to help you change your oil or install a stereo or something. If they know a lot about computers, back up your hard drive and then crash your computer somehow and ask them to help you fix it. If they know an instrument, ask for a little lesson just for fun. If the love basketball, ask to play a game of hoarse or something.
Also, things of this nature dont just get attention, they get you time with the person. They are not awkward situations, since there is a purpose and a goal involved, which makes it more relaxed and natural for both parties. This invitably leads to everyone having more fun, and cultivatiing some sort of relationship that is easier to build on.
Just pick something they know, and ask for them to teach you. Forget the fear, be vulnerable for a minute, and you will be amazed at what can result.
