There are two possible sources for this trouble.

(1) The BT run in the central office from the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) to the splitter does not connect to the telephone switch.

(2) The splitter in your home is faulty. Try disconnecting the DSL modem and connect a telephone directly into the BT master socket in your home.

It could be a problem with the surge arrester or ring capacitor in your master socket -- again try to connect a phone directly on the copper pair to isolate the master socket. Diagram shown in the link below ...

If there is a problem outside, BT shouldn't charge if it's inside they do.
Have you got a microfilter connected to each each piece of equipment that uses the telephone to communicate eg,., phone, fax, answerphone as each one needs one? Have you tried changing them at all? as they are very prone to breaking down and there is no visible signs of problem - all you get is the failure!!
Hope this helps in some way

Really depends!

If you have been made incoming calls only (for exampl for non payment) your broadband connection will still work.

If you stopped your service your broadband will still work for a couple of weeks until the ISP remove their equipment from the line.

If none of the above - could be faulty microfilter/router.....try unplugging/disconnecting one and plugging phone straight into main line and see how you go!

Nick has it right... you should have 4 wires in your phone line... two that run the phone and two that carry the dsl signal. You can have a problem on one side and not the other.

if you have cat five ran to that location or a four conductor wire and they use orange and blue for the phone and one of them are disconnected than that will cause the phone not to work and the green and brown for the adsl

Are you with Carphone Warehouse. This happened to me and the engineer that came to fix it told me that when you lose the telephone connection for some reason the broadband will keep searching to try and connect albeit as a much lower speed.

Last week our phone was out but our internet was fine too. I didn't understand it either. They came out and the problem was with their equipment and not ours so there was no charge. Hopefully you will have the same luck.
