The only lake to be given the title of 'Lake' is Bassenthwaite Lake. All the others are 'Meres' such as Windermere, Grasmere and Thirlmere or they're 'Waters' such as Derwentwater, Crummock Water or Ullswater.
References to Lake Windermere, Lake Derwent, Buttermere Lake etc are common errors

Well, a lake is a body of fresh or salt water surrounded by land.
So take a look at the map of The lake district, Cumbria and you can take it from there. I suggest an ordinace survey map.
It is easy really.

The only actual lake is Bassenthwaite.
The rest are "meres", waters or tarns. Such as Windermere, Coniston Water and Tarn Hows.

Bassenthwaite, and it is a man-made reservoir. All the others are "waters" or "meres", and the smaller ones are "tarns".
