There is a chickadee that recently began to build a nest in a bird house in my backyard. A blue bird has found the bird house and wants to take it from the chickadee. How does one bird "win" the bird house? Does one bird have to kill the other in order to "win" the nesting site?

This even happens in trees. Prime nesting sites are frequently in contention, with two or more birds fighting over who gets to lay eggs there. Usually the bigger bird will win, and will even eat any eggs that have been laid already. They "win" by physically forcing the other bird out. It's not usually fatal to either bird. If the chickadee simply sits tight and outlasts the bluebird, she may win. But, chances are that if she doesn't have a male bringing her food and helping her defend her area, then she's eventually going to have to leave to eat, and the bigger bird is going to move in.

However, increasing the number of bird houses can decrease the fights. This kind of fight means that nesting sites are in short supply (probably from human developement).

The birds shouldn't fight till death.. I wouldn't worry about that. I wouldn't disturb them either. You should let nature take it's course. I am a Christian and I would pray about it if it bothers you that much. I respect if you aren't Christian. If it still bothers you that the birds are fighting scare them both away and tear down the nest, then they will both have to build a nest somewhere else. I would not advise this though.

This is just natural behaviour. One will give up. Birds generally don't fight to the death unless of course they are predatory. The one that gives up will build else where. All is good. Have a great day everyday.

no they will not fight til their death. One bird will be more aggressive and the other will eventually back down. You might think about putting another box out, but you may still see some fighting going on too. It is all a part of nature.

I never liked noisy blue birds but chickadees are cute and sound pretty. Got a BB-gun? I'll solve the problem for you quickly. :) LOL

Kidding...be good to chase the mean one away though.
