The best most nutritious foods for your dog and also for your puppy are foods that don't contain corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, by products, dyes, sugars, chemical preservatives. Corn, wheat & soy are common allergens, corn & wheat aren't very digestable, corn & soy have been implicated in recent studies as a cause for unexplained seizures in dogs. Soy causes excess gas, corn & wheat can cause serious digestive upsets. Also foods that contain the above ingredients tend to produce more waste. It takes up to 3 times more of a grain based low quality food for a dog to get proper nutrition then it does of a good quality meat based (meat as at least the first 2-3 ingredients) food. Dogs are carnivores...meat eaters not grain eaters..their jaws, teeth and digestive systems are designed to exctrat and digest meats and meat proteins not grains.
Some good choices:
Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Wellness, Premium Edge, Percise, Blue Buffalo,Innova, California Natural just to name a few.
Vets are wonderful and I've worked for/with vets for almost 35 years, sadly though most are out of the loop as far as quality foods are concerned. They only get a general nutrition class that takes in everything from cats to rats, dogs to hogs..not species specific. They tend to recommend those foods that they hear the most about..are the most familiar with..Unfortunately these foods aren't of quality and tend to be store foods..such as Science Diet, pedigree, Purina and the like.

I have done some extensive reaseach into dog foods not because its fun but because as a breeder I want the best possible food for my dogs without busting my budget. I have a comparision nutrition listing linked to my website. Take a look and please read the analysis sections to see whats in dogfoods. Also check out the blue seal site and the evolve dog food sites. I perfer the blueseal life styles in the adult foods but the evolve puppy food is a little less rich and digests easier. check it out burdicklabradors.com. Just remember read the labels. Stay away from meat and chicken by products of any kind, corn meal and soy.

there are several brands availible that use good ingrediants in their dog kibble. What you are looking for is a food that does not use bi-products ( chicken= beak,feet,ect..not digestible) Also you preferablly want to use meats that are easy for dogs to digest in general like lamb and rice. You want to look at the "fillers" dog foods use. All dog foods will have some, but the ratios are higher on low end foods. When reading the ingrediant on the labels remember the first ingrediant in the main ingrediant and so on and so forth. Science diet is prefered by vets for several reasons, for one they make a version of foods for dogs that have special needs that are sold by prescricption only, there for the vets are getting these foods at a premium and they are contracted with Hill's/science diet. Of course they are going to recommend the brand :) But science diet also has alot of by-products in their foods which not only is non- digestible but will cause your puppy to eat more because it temp. fills them and poop more because the body cannot use it. I use Nutro's brand "Small bites" lamb and rice for my Pug. There are other brands like "Blue" that are really good also.
