Because without a mate to snuggle up to, he's on his own to freeze his little tushy off in that temperature. That's too cold for these guys.

My house never, EVER gets colder than 72 degrees. I'm hoping that was a typo and you meant 71 degrees, but 51 is too cold.

Yeah, 51 is too cold for an unacclimated bird. However, in the wild these guys sometimes get to below freezing. Even without a mate, if he is acclimated correctly it wouldn't be too cold. But I do think it is a typo because I don't know any (person) who can stand 51 degrees for very long!

Often the first sign of an ill bird is a fluffed appearance. The next signs may be lethargy, loss of appetite, and poop stuck to his vent. It's definitely a good idea to take him to an avian vet, especially if he's showing any of these other signs! ASAP!

Hi there. If your home is 51 degrees Fahrenheit, it is too cold for your bird and you. Try to turn up the heat for the comfort and health of you both. Have a great day everyday.

Bird normally puff up only when they are ill. They puff when they are trying to maintain body temp. He may have a fever.Sounds like you need to move him in to a bathroom area. Raise the temp to around 80 degrees go to your local pet store and ask if they carry any bird antibiotics to add to his water. Make sure you are changing out his water on a regular basis. Clean water and fresh seed are needed all of the time. Also be sure to clean his cage out every few days. Good luck, you may want to call around and see if you have a local avian vet. teils live up to 20 years to 25 years of age. Mine is 20 now.
