I stopped eating trashy candy like Snicker's bars a long, long time ago. Now I save up my cravings and money and go for the good stuff- chocolate made with real Cacao. My taste buds and my waistline both appreciate this effort. Over time and with age, chocolate has replaced beer as my vice of choice.

Sometimes I like dark choc, and less often I like milk choc, depending on my craving.

Specialty truffles are a rare indulgence, but these are simply the best chocolate experience. Once you spend $5 on a truffle, it's best to sit down in a park, clear your thoughts, and savor each tiny nibble like a true fiend. The best places for truffles I have ever found were Goldleaf Chocolate and Teuscher Chocolate in San Francisco. Sharfenberger in Berkeley, CA makes good gourmet choc bars.

During leaner times, I like the European stuff available at places like Trader Joe's or Berkeley Bowl. (German, Belgian, Italian perhaps) with hazelnuts/filberts or hazelnut nougat. It is easy to find "Ritter" bars from Germany almost anywhere in the US if you look.

Some of the Japanese candy makers like Meiji have some great bars too (the Ghana bar, Black bar, etc.). They tend to be very smooth and melty to suit Japanese taste, and I like the way they add a little less sugar and achieve a little more chocolate taste without making it darker or more bitter. They aren't very expensive either- about the same as trader Joe's. Tokyo market in Berkeley and Nigiya markets throughout the country where you can find them.

When all else fails, I like the simple Hershey's dark chocolate and milk/almond bars. Great to keep in the freezer in case of emergency.

I also like to keep pure cacao powder in the house to mix with hot milk and honey for a REAL cup of hot chocolate (not hot sugar water).

The most bizarre chocolate I've ever tried was one blended with habanero peppers- yet it was actually very good! The tastes suited on another and reminded me of a Mexican mole` dish. But I'll stick to hazelnut from now on, thanks...

It has got to be butlers. Handmade Irish milk chocolate from dublin. You can buy it in the UK online from www.mrsomalleys.co.uk
It is so creamy and smooth that it must surely be bad for you in some way!

I like every kind of chocolate! Which really is a bummer cause then if people ever offer me a chocolate i can never say 'No sorry i don't like that kind..' And then obviously.. it won't help to lose weight.
