Geodon is actually an atypical antipsychotic medication and is also now approved for treatment of acute mania and mixed episodes in individuals with Bipolar Disorder. If it is used for behavioral problems with nursing home patients it is likely being prescribed in order to quell the agitation or to potentially treat psychotic symptoms associated with dementia. It's not an uncommon practice to use antipsychotics (which tend to have sedating properties) to de-escalate behavior problems associated with mental retardation and other conditions, although this is not a primary use of the medication.

If you're speaking of Geodon-it is often given to very senior adults who act out sexually at innapropriate times. I work in an Assisted Living Facility, where this occasionally happens to residents afflicted with dementia or Alzheimers. They aren't even aware of their actions most of the time. Becuase this causes great embarrassment to other residents, families, etc.; Geodon is the prescription of choice.

I believe that you are referring to Geodon. I have had more than one student on it and it worked as a mood stabilizer for one of them. He had Asperger's syndrome and would get frustrated easily.

Geodon is a mood stabilizer...it has nothing to do with seniors, although it must work if they keep prescribing it at that nursing home.
