I'm working on a project at home. Right now I have 20 year old carpeting on my stairs...but underneath is a pretty light wood. I want to take off the carpeting and stain them. What kind of seal do i put over the stain to protect them from the wear of people constantly walking on them?

So, obviously you know to sand the wood before staining and in between coats of stain (very light and fine). I would also recommend at least two coats of stain. Then you should use a polyurethane lacquer and apply at least three coats. Due to the high amount of traffic I would suggest installing a carpet runner up the stairs. It also helps prevent slips and falls on the smooth wood. If you leave it bare, you will probably need to refinish every 5 years or so...as long as nobody wears shoes on the stairs!!

Look for the stain called Minwax. It is one of the best on the market. When you are finished staining, then seal the stairs with a good clear high gloss polyurathane for protection.

watco is a staining oil that requires no laquers .you can rewipe more on to refresh the finish any time in the future without hours of stripping and sanding.

You can get stain and finish in one. The trick is to put on paper thin coats. Make sure you let it dry ALL THE WAY in between coats.
