I'm surprised that so many people have suggested colours without psychological support for them.
Obviously, light colours make rooms look larger, but that's probably not what you want to go for.
The thing with having a yellow or orange room is that while it's helpfully energetic, overstimulation can induce paranoia. The same with blue being calm, only overstimulation can cause slightly depressed moods.
Anyway... that shouldn't be my point! I think it's up to the teenager how they want it, but I'd put my foot down if I was made to buy furniture (excl. bed perhaps) that I know he would not take on to adulthood. Probably because it's a waste of money really. Understandable for toddlers, not so much for teenagers.
My brother is 17, and his room was light blue with navy bedsheets. a blue and beechwood wardrobe and desk for his computer (important to teenagers these days. ;D) and enough storage space for his PS2 stuff, college stuff, and any other crap he has.
I liked the idea of the chrome and glass stuff. Very modern but suitable for adults too. I think ultimately, teenagers want to feel like adults. (Which is why I hated the sports or wallpaper prints idea.)
Good luck in finding your answer, and decorating the room! :)

*smiles*....There are so many wonderful things and themes you can do with their room, I really don't know where to begin. I must say though, (having a teenage daughter) I think that it is very VERY important to make the two boys a huge part of the decision when it comes to the colour, furniture, theme of the room...when it comes to everything. Remember, if the boys love the room, they will spend more time in it and even invite friends over to watch tv, play video games etc. At least when they are home, over your roof, you don't have to worry. (Which is why I really didn't mind dishing out about $600. to make my daughters rooms what she wanted. I know where she is.).....Skateboarding and music, both sound great to me.....and I am sure you will do a wonderful job with their help. Oh, and be sure to have them do that....the painting and work I mean........Good luck, from one Mom to another.

Use white paint for the walls it will keep your room looking big and cool. I would buy a computer desk. Buy yourself a lcd tv for the wall. Maybe a pool table. Maybe a couch. Your options are endless. It really depends on how much money you have to spend. Good Luck

It really depends of what group the boy fits in... Let him choose what he really wants, the bedroom's the most important place for a teenager.

Bedsheets should blend in with wankstains, secret loose floorboard should allow acess to storage area that can house booze, porn and a bit of hash, naked female posters on wall and obligatory footy team poster. You should also have a sofa-bed so that you can alternate with girls between bed and sofabed so she doesn't get a whiff of the last one's perfume and get stroppy.

My room is bright yellow and full of ikea pine furniture. Works for me. (I am a teenage boy)
One tip, leave some wallspace for posters.

It depends on the boy! Why go for stereotypes and suggestions from people who don't know him? Condiser who he is and what he likes and design the room around him.
Individuality, people! It's not a bad thing!
