lack of oxygen is the main cause. we breathe about 20% to 25% oxygen mix. if your body gets under 20% (many causes, drinking, smoking, smog etc) you leave yourself open for headaches. there are many other factors though.

The most common type of headache is a tension headache which may be caused by posture. Some experience headaches when dehydrated in which drinking allot of fluids will help get rid of it, or suffering from caffeine withdrawal symptoms. Headaches may also be caused in some people by certain foods, such as peanuts, or food additives, such as tartrazine. They may also be caused by fumes, such as from a faulty heating boiler or from vehicles. But mine are always from seeing that my ex wife is still breathing.

many, many things...from a simple stress headache and or related issues from and to serious issues going on with-in the body! And yes, a major hangover could be medically significant as related to an over dose of alcohol abuses!!

I think a headache is so individual. Weather, stress, your diet, and fatigue-
If you find you get a lot of headaches keep a journal.
Bring it up to your MD.
Drink a lot of water, rest (8 ++ hours)
and fresh air/exercise.
