i have never seen a koi and mermaid together in a tattoo but i do have a painting that my tattoo artist did for me for my birthday that has a mermaid with 5 koi fish swimming around her. it is very peaceful and goddess like. i love both mermaids and kois. my suggestion is to go to a custom tattoo artist that can create a tattoo for you that will be unique to just you. good luck!

get ideas for the koi fish and mermaid at the sources listed below. Combine the two designs for what I think would be a great custom design.

If you can find a peice of artwork or something you like someplace take it to a custom Artist and use it to help you and the artist sit down and design something completely unique and meaningful to you. If you're going to do something with a background (which I recomend for a peice like that) I would add something personal and peacful to yourself in it. - Just my 2 cents

it's already embroidered on the back pocket of my habitual jeans ( the koi fish jean)
try having the koi fishes tail...flow into the mermaids tail.

I don't think it is "over done" as it is keeping with the nautical theme. I actually think that sounds really cool! Talk to your artist and see what you can come up with together to keep it unique and "You"! Have fun!
