Many cultures had or still have their own calendars. The Persian calendar is used in Iran and Afghanistan. The Islamic calendar is used by the non-Persian Muslims the world over. The Chinese, Hebrew, Hindu, and Julian calendars are widely used for religious and/or social purposes. The Ethiopian calendar or Ethiopic calendar is the principal calendar used in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

They didn't. Even BC & AD determinations came about long afterward - as a historical/chronological reference when referring to past events.

It varies from culture to culture.
The ancient Egyptians for example would say something like 'in the 5th year of the reign of Tutunkhamun'.
In Islamic countries, its about the year 1600 as they started counting from the birth of the prophet Mohammed.
