1) Cost approx £8000 (one off) plus Consultants at £1000 per week == a Medium Business solution, for those that don't want to learn how to do it themselves.

2) Cost approx £80,000 (every year) plus Consultants at £1000 per DAY == a BIG Business Solution (for those that have more money than sense)

3) Cost zero, you can do it yourself (if you have a degree in Computing and experience of implementing Open Source) = small Business Solution (or hire Junior DBA's @ £500 per week).

for a start up, mysql will do purely high-quality. in my opinion, i've got faith that oracle is over-rated, and that i've got by no skill touched sq. server. purely hire somebody who is conscious what they are doing. lots is going into database layout :)
