The types of lines he used are very contrasting. He uses sharp vertical lines leading to the face to draw attention to the mans face and ultimately who he is. In his jacket the lines are very sharp as well as in the city scape behind him. The sky is more rounded and soft, but very uniform. The mans face is slightly pudgy, but his eyebrows and lips are very well defined. With the city behind him, and his eyes averted off canvas, it is implied that he has something behind him, and is looking forward to, what he left for. There is also an element Salvador Dali had in MANY of his paintings, The Crutch. The crutch is symbolic in Dali in a way that everybody is using something to stifle their problems. The crutch is not supporting anything in this painting, but it may be implied that soon, this man will be the subject of needing some kind of support.

Can you tell I love Salvador Dali?

I do appreciate the subtle juxtaposition of the detailed and curved lines in the foreground and the simple, more linear shapes in the background. I also noticed he seemed to exaggerate the facial features, making them larger. The portrait itself seems more honest than most; it is less aesthetic and focuses more on reality than the glorification of human form that many other artists tend to focus on.

I like the way the artist portrayed the man's emotions on his face, as well as the use of light in shadowing the face.

It's very strong. And you can really think about it and why the scary man is sad.
