I'm going to Kansas City this May when I come home from overseas on vacation and I'll take the best the city has to offer.

Gates & Sons BBQ...they are a chain all over and you'll get more than you can eat for $12.95. Believe the hype, it's the best!

Kansas City is a large border city. The Kansas/Missouri state line runs right through it. The bigger portion of the city is in the Missouri side. Since a city government must be a member of a State, the Missouri side of the city is called Kansas City, Missouri and has its own city government. Likewise, the Kansas side of the city is called Kansas City, Kansas and also has its own city government. Therefore, aside from city governments and the 'Welcome to Missouri or Kansas' billboard you will see while driving, it is really the same city (dictionary wise).

BBQ: Jack Stack, in my humble opinion, has the best chow around. Typically when you think ribs, you think pork spareribs, which are wonderful there. They also have lamb ribs, or my personal favorite, the "Crown Ribs of Beef" which are the meatiest, tenderest ribs I have ever eaten. I am guessing they are the meat that you find around the rib bone of the prime rib itself. Nothing better.

2nd choice is Gates. I wouldn't say that Gates is "all over", but there are a few in town. The problem with that place is the ambiance...they're known for their signature slogan "Can I help you!?" which they start shouting at you as soon as you come in the door before you can look at the menu. Don't let it phase you...study the menu and figure out what you want before going to the register to order. It's cafeteria style, so you order at the register and pick your food up before going to your table. The "Mixed Plate" (beef, ribs, ham, fries) is my favorite.

Steak: Not a big steak eater, sorry. :) Typically the best steak that I eat comes off my grill.

For Steaks I would recommend The Golden OX, The Herford House or Jes and Jims Steakhouse.
For BBQ I would go with Kansas City Masterpiece or Quicks 7th St BBQ

Steaks: The Herford House is always a good bet, but I like J. Alexander's in Johnson County the best. As for ribs, Gates and Sons is the best, with Oklahoma Joes in the running too. I also reccomend the Smokehouse in Gladstone too.

Smokehouse on N OAK for ribs & BBQ( the VERY BEST!!!!) Ivy's on NW Barry RD for steak. Also for the very best Italian steak & fine dining Cafe Italia on N Oak & Barry RD.
The two times I went to Jess & Jim's I got a rancid steak & sick. Golden Ox is very good too.

I'm sorry to say, the places are all.... well just O.K. If you like corporations and frozen cuts. Piropos is the place to be. Everyone should look it up for a fabulous dining experience and a steak that melts in your mouth.
