if you have virgin hair (chemically untouched), you can pretty much do whatever you want to it. i always suggest going to a professional for color services, but if you must do it yourself, here's a few option...
1. choose a box color that is at your natural level or no more than 2 shades lighter than your natural level....
-your natural level is the degree of darkness (the amount of pigment) that your hair has - 1 being the darkest, 10 being the lightest.
theres a brand of color (i'm not exactly sure which one it is) that uses a level system similar to that which professional hairstylists use. i would absolutely suggest using that one.
if you go more than 2 shades lighter than your natural color, you begin messing with underlying pigments (depending on the level can range from red to orange to yellow), which 9 times out of 10 cause undesired results. i've seen alot of box color disasters...trust me on this one.
2. you can try a semi-permanent color or glaze (like john freida's) to brighten your natural color.
TRUE semi-perm colors don't lighten your hair at all...they just deposit color creating a different tone or more depth.
-for example, if your have a level 6 light brown (most people have a 5 or 6 natural level, but its usually very drab or ashy which makes it look dark and dull), and you want some warmth added, choose a level 6 semi-perm with some gold or red, and it will just add those tones to your natural color without really changing it all that much.
john freida makes those color glazes. im not sure how they work, but we have a professional product thats similar (we have WAY more color options, but the actual product itself is similar). it will add shine and translucent tone (meaning see-through). think nylons instead of tights. this is a great way to experiment with tone.
if you have chemically treated hair already, the only way to ligthen is with bleach, or some kind of bleach mixture. artificial color can not lift artificial color out of hair. i know, it sucks, and when i was learning about hair color in school i couldn't figure it out. but thats just the way it is. you dont' want to be messing with this yourself, trust me. you'll end up spending more money getting it fixed than you would have to get it done in the first place. always seek professional service when dealing with bleach...you can really screw up your hair. i've seen people with blonde roots, reddish mid-sections, and black ends, because they tried putting blonde color over previously colored brown hair. it's not pretty, and it's a ***** to fix.
i hope this isn't too confusing. hair color is complicated. like i said, i dont recommend doing it yourself but if you must, be smart about it. i hope this helps.
*UPDATE*
the sun will dry your hair out, you should always use a hair sunscreen (try Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray) to prevent your hair from the sun.
also, using any kind of spray or lemons (yuck) that helps the sun make your hair lighter is a bad idea. your hair will be fried by the end of the summer. i used lemons when i was 12, and yea, my hair was lighter by the end of the summer (not THAT much lighter), but it was dry and brittle and gross. the acid from the lemons (also in Sun-IN) creates a chemical reaction in your hair. if your going to use chemicals, i'd much rather have you use an actual color because hair color now-a-days have conditioners and extracts to protect and condition your hair.

anything you do do not dye it your self. I received bored of my medium-honey blond hair color and idea it wanted lightening so i dyed it pondering it could best seem a little exclusive however recognize my common color is coming again by way of nd the roots seem terrible so i've the alternative to both develop it out and seem like an fool for 3 years, preserve demise it or pay anyone allot to get it dyed again to its common color. I recommend going to a god salon and might be getting 1 / 4 to a part head of highlights. Your hair will seem like is visible a few solar however the difference would possibly not be so dramatic that it'll seem unnatural.

If you stay in the sun a lot, it will brighten your hair-color. Just make sure to wear sunscreen! Or, if you don't like natural ways, go to a close-by hair stylist and have them dye your hair. Good luck!

Well you can highlight it or dye it. There are also sprays you can apply to your hair which lighten your hair colour naturally under the sun.
