Depends where you are in wine appreciation...

Don't know and don't care - 2: a bottle of red and a bottle of white

Easing into it - 4: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio

You know your varietals and what foods they pair with - 6: Napa Cab Sav, Washington Merlot, Austrailian Shiraz, Peruvian Chard, Napa Pinot Grigio, Italian Sauvignon Blanc

You can pinpoint region and year based on taste: the possiblities are endless. Once you get here though, you shouldn't need to ask what wines you should have :)

What are you asking? How many types of wine there are? More than I feel like listing here there are so many. From there, the juice from different grapes can be blended together.

The ones most often seen in America are:

Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot
Zinfandel
Chardonnay
Cabernet Franc (as a blending grape)
Shiraz/Syrah
Viognier
Gewurztraminer
Pinot Gris/Grigio
Pinot Noir
Pinot Meunier (as a champagne blender)
Sangiovese
Sauvignon Blanc
Muscat
Reisling
Barbera
Carmenere
Malbec
Montelpulciano
Nebbiolo
Tempranillo
Chenin Blanc
Semillon

there are probably another dozen grapes that are common to US wines that I am forgetting.

And then, of cource, you can make various fruit wines and mead (from honey).

There are literally many, many, many types of wines!
From Cabernet Sauvignon to Sauvignon Blanc to Primitivo, Reisling, Gewuerztraminer, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Moscato d'Alba, Negroamaro, Vermentino, etc., etc. There are also blends of different grape varieties and different countries and areas of production from Italy to New Zealand.

28 bottles of sparkling wine, a small handful of different reds, and one bottle of viognier.

At least that's what's in this house.
