You have to be under 12 points on your license. Violations are ranked differently:
Usually your first speeding ticket in 12 months is no points, subsequent speeds are 2 or 3 points each, depending on the speed.
A DUI (now OVI) is 8 points.
Drag Racing is 6 points
Reckless Operation is 4 points.

Other violations are different points. Points drop off your license after the violation is 3 years old.

In Ohio at 12 points on your driving record you get to surrender your license to them.
