Brainwashing is changing someone's total belief structure. Manipulating is putting together a sequence of events that will lead to someone performing an action you want to happen.

I don't think there is a difference.
However, I would be inclined to think that brainwashing is a complete change of doctrine and or creed and accomplished by more of a verbal onslaught enhanced by a fiercely dedicated consistency.
Manipulation I would assume, involves more of a physical form of coercion. Forcing an issue by actions, deeds, etc.
Both have the same goal.

Manipulation is the process of getting a person to alter their behavior in a specific manner. Brainwashing refers to methods of changing a person's thought patterns.
