when i first bought this parakeet (Sage), i knew i had enough hours to devote to spending time with it. All of a sudden, my library called in and told me that I got the job there (i had applied for this job a long time ago, and they finally hv a position for me). I'm thinking of getting Sage a friend, so he won't be so lonely without me. We are at the point where he's finally tame and comfortable of getting out of the cage, and he will perch on my finger when i put it close to him. If i get him a friend, will it mean he will stop doing all this with me? will he not want to come out of the cage again? will i have to tame him all over again?

Getting your bird a friend will keep him from being totally bored to death & lonely since you won't be there with him. He will still be your same old friend. nothing to worry about there. If you do get him one though, it is best to keep it in a seperate cage & let them get to know each other through the bars before putting them together. You may want to tame the new one before introducing it to the one you already have. If not, set the cages next to each other, but not so close that they can reach each other. then after a few days of being next to each other, let them out of their cages & see how they react to one another. If all seems fine, try putting them together. If they start to fight, seperate them again & try again another day. New toys can also help relieve bordom. Get a bunch of different ones & change the toys in his cage every day before you leave for work. That way he won't get as bored with them. When you get home keep up with what you have been doing with him up until this point & all should be well.

Hi there. Sage will more than likely bond with the other bird. he can retain his skills with you if they are practiced even for only 10 minutes a day. The other bird may follow his lead. Compatibility is a very important factor. It seems you have an eye for sweet birds anyway. Things will work out. Quarantine is very important when adding a new bird. Birds like other animals have the instinct to hide illness in fear of being left behind by the flock. 10 days apart from Sage may save any future heart break. Good luck on your quest and know all will work out. Use your good judgment. have a great day;everyday.

Parakeets are funny birds. He will be just as happy with a mirror in his cage. If you get him another male they some times pull each others feathers out. They would need a very large cage. If your cage is big just make sure you get another male and you will be fine if you still give them both a lot of attention when you are at home. If you get a female your bird will bond with her and you will have lost your buddy. He will become a bitter. So I'd say just get him a Mirror and leave the radio on during the day time. He will be happy and so will you.

You are gonna have to tame the other bird. If you dont have a lot of time to spendwith your parakeets...try your best. Play with them for at least 20-230 minutes everyday. Sage will still trust you but wil have more love for his parakeet companion than you.

he shouldn't stop doing things with you. he loves you! as for getting him a friend, that's a great idea. since you will be gone more and parakeets are very social birds he will need company. If he DOES start spending less time with you because of the new bird it is probably because he is just observing the presence of the other bird and is getting used to the change. It won't last probably more than 2-3 days.
Good Luck!

if you want sage to stay nice, do not get him a friend. paraketes tend to get very attatched to other birds and will become antisocial. there are other things that you can do to spend more time with him. here is a list of the following:
1. during all times when you are home, take him out and set him on your shoulder. he will learn his rightful place there and it will become natural for him to stay with you.
2. take him with you. at petsmart and petco you can buy a bird harness that comes with a leash. they sell them in all sized and the parakete size is common. when you go out, simply slip it on him and set him on your shoulder. who knows, he may just enjoy going to the mall, or taking walks, or going to the library with you.
3. set his cage in an active place. do not shut him away in a room. put his cage out where he can see you and hear you when you move. who knows, he may enjoy watching tv with you.
hope this helps. just take any chance you get to be with sage and if he will not go out with you now, he will eventually get used to it.

if you get a new one your old one might not like you as much as it's friend but it will still like you and come on your hand. just make sure you keep playing with him and dont put the two birds in the same cage. each in seprate cages next to each other until they start getting used to each other. then you can put them in one cage just dont be suprised if the old one tries to dominate and acts jealous.

you'd have to tame the new one. the old one will probabaly get more and more attached to the new one than you if you are gone all the time. but you might want to wait a while so he can get totaly get used to the cage. but he or she will have to get used to it all over again

You'd have to tame the new one, and DONT GET THE SAME GENDER! they'll hurt each other. Just make sure they share food and water, and they'll be fine. Good Luck :)
