I'm looking at sites that sell chicks. I know what cockerels and pullets are, but what does "straight run" mean?

straight run chickens are just chickens that have not been sorted by sex. this means that if you buy a group of straight runs, then there is no way of knowing how many roosters and hens you will have until they mature. your better luck will be to just pay a little extra and know what your getting rather than be over burdened with too many roosters or not enough hens.

Straight run is just whatever goes in the box. In most cases, they just take the newly hatched chickens and send them out, with no clue as to wether or not they are male or female. But don't count on fifty/fifty. Some places are in the habit of sorting unordered chicks in with straight run so that if they have a lot of orders for female chicks, you'll end up with all the males and only a few females.

So, if you want to order straight run, go through a reliable hatchery that has enough orders that they don't have to ditch the unwanted birds.

Greathoudini has pretty much said everything, although I will just add that you will get roughly 50/50 hens and roosters, whereas you only need one rooster to every 8 hens.
