You can go Insert and click on Special Character. Select Times New Roman or whatever font you're using from the font drop box, then select the letter that you want.
Or... all of the letters have a special short cut.
you hold alt down and press:
for accents:
a is 225
e is 233
i is 237
o is 243
u is 250
the tilda over the n is 241
capitals:
A is 193
E is 201
I is 205
O is 211
U is 218
N is 209
the catch: to use the short cuts, you have to use the number pad, not the numbers on top of the letters. On a laptop the number pad is the right hand letters, so you have to turn on the number lock then type the numbers... and it turns into more work than going to the menu and selecting the special characters.
If you're working on a laptop, I suggest going to the special character box and inserting all the letters you'll be using, then when you need them, copy and paste them to the place you need them. If you have a desktop, it's not that hard.
note... When I was in high school and used the shortcut numbers, I'm certain that they were different. That was 5 years ago now, but you might want to check and be sure that my shortcuts work on your computer. if they don't, you can see what the shortcut is for the letter in the top right corner of the special character box when you select the letter that you need.

You can find it at top of left corner of keyboard. You may also generate yourself many such character by pressing Alt key and numeric figure at a time example if you press Alt key and 3 then you will get ⥠sign. Thus press Alt key and 126 at a time and get ~ sign. This is called code page which you can make from own knowledge.

In Word, there are also shortcuts:
ctrl + ' + a = á
ctrl + ' + e = é
ctrl + ' + i = Ã
ctrl + ' + o = ó
ctrl + ' + u = ú
ctrl + shift + ` + n = ñ
When you go to insert, then symbol, any character you see has a shortcut at the bottom. If there isn't one, you can make a shortcut.

Go to "Insert"
Click "Special Characters"
Choose the font you are typing in and it'll give you all the letters with accents marks over them.
Hope this helps :)
