toby my fellas 8 year old flat coated retriever keeps getting really depressed.

we took him to the vet at first we thought it was his legs going but the vet found a moving tumor in his stomach.
the vet wants to do an internal inspection to see if its removable.
he didnt seem to positive about it. he said if it can be removed then the dog has half a chance.

Sadly Flat coats are predisposed to a number of different cancers & cancer of the spleen is pretty common in all dogs - I lost my Akita to this last year. He too was 8 yrs old, but showed no symptons until the morning I had him put to sleep. In his case (as in many) by the time it was discovered it had already spread to his liver. It is sometimes possible to operate but the cancer often returns within 6 months in another organ. Sorry not to have anything more positive to add.

Is the tumor in on his spleen or stomach? And does the veterinarian know for sure which organ is affected. He or she should have an abdominal ultrasound done (the vet can either do it themselves, or consult a reputable ultrasonographer) before performing any type of surgery. It is important to gather all information possible before going to surgery, and if your vet determines the tumor is affecting only one organ he or she should not start the surgery without being prepared to remove the tumor. You should never ever start a surgery just to look at a problem and not go all the way to "fix" it. If you veterinarian doesn't feel he or she is capable of removing the tumor even if it is amenable to removal perhaps you should take your dog to a referral practice which is more experienced at doing this type of procedure.

Yes unfortunately, our dog just had an aggressive tumor on his heart/aorta. He was 2 years old. Really the only way you will know for sure is probably surgery. Im sorry good luck

my sisters dog had lots of tumours, the vet treament gave her an extra 8mths, and she was quite happy, but there does come a time to let them go. so when the dog has no interest in life, then thats the time, sad but true, i hope she gets better, good luck.x
