In debate terms, it is called deflection. It is a tactic to take the focus away from logical things like the fact that no god would ever have the emotional need to be prayed to. It also has a sociological effect of control. Once you get a parishioner doing a nonsensical act, it shows obedience and conformity. I know this term is used quite a bit when talking about religion, but it is a sociological form of brainwashing.

Speaking in tongues may be a very misunderstood and misused concept. There are a lot of fakes and a lot of counterfeits. Unfortunately, the most advertised and visible expressions of the Holy Spirit manifestations are either fake or evil inspired selfish demonstrations for material gain.
But Speaking in Tongues is real and Godly. It's the or (a) gift received by very true and dedicated children of God. It looks nonsensical and insane to a non-believer or an ignorant (people who closed their mind to scriptural revelations to their convenience) person. This experience is only available to people who truly invited The Lord in to the throne room of their lives and let Him rule. This is true worship.
Remember, it is very real and very satisfying and so it is very much copied and counterfeited by the unfaithful. God bless.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.
’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Yes; personally I've always had a rather dim view of all that.
It's as if the fervency of a person's beliefs have to be characterized by the flamboyancy of their behavior.
I don't mind a little joy, if you know what I mean, but even all this arm waving and weeping at christian music festivals gets to be a bit much; I think it's as stupid as secular "mosh pits."
There's no logical reason that expressions of belief have to get utterly ridiculous.

No, the Bible teaches us that it is necessary for a Christian to speak in tongues in order to be built up - its all there in the Scripture. Read Acts and 1 Corinthians

Pentacostals and Apostolics feel it manditory.
Roman Catholics worry it could be demonic possession.
The Bible says you need a translator, which indicates it must be a real langauge, one the person speaking does not know.

There are a number of people in my family that attend Pentacostal churches where such things occur. I don't think they'd call it hysteria.
It's cathartic and saves on therapy bills - no need to knock it.

Their gibberish is never part of any language, it is quite funny. If there was a speaking in tongues channel I'd watch.

It's just an attention-seeking mechanism that is used by people who otherwise have very little to offer!
