You know, I've actually heard that this can go both ways.
People can talk on the phone for hours with a person, but when they get that person in the flesh, there is no chemisty.
Perhaps you view talking on the phone a waste of time and would rather see her in person? If you want to have long conversations on the phone with her, then make a list of things you want to know about her, and ask her these things off the list...start a topic of conversation that you are both interested in. If this still doesn't spark the phone thing, but the two of you have great chemistry in person, then, I really wouldn't worry about it. Gabbing on the phone is actually a waste of time. I mean, wouldn't you rather be doing something than sitting with a phone glued to your ear? Think about it.

RE:
How to make phone conversations less boring and more romantic?
I have a great gf, we click really well in person and can talk for hours and hours at a time. But over the phone we both completely lose that spark. I can't seem to hold a phone conversation longer than 20 minutes without bouts of silence and humming. Sometimes I feel like I'm talking to...

If you think he is being boring and dull, he probably thinks the same about you hence why he's not making the effort. If you really want to sort this out you need to speak to each other and compromise face to face! Not over the phone or AIM. And if you both love each other, its possible. By the sounds of it, you're quite liking college with all the cute guys. Sweetie, just because your boyfriend is saying S.h.I.t down the phone, it isn't an excuse for lying to him and then hanging with a sexy gorgeous guy.. Then again, you have to think maybe he's trying to bore you off the phone so he can study? Or maybe have your motives and hang with a sexy gorgeous girl? My personal opinion is that long distance works for the minority. Before I moved to uni it only took my partner a week to finish it. It crushed me, hurt me and i was very angry with her.. but one day when i see her, i'll have to thank her. You know why? Because she gave me back the best years of my life and now I can have fun and not have a relationship adding to the stress of student life. With things the way they are now between you and your fella, I think you need to have a serious look into the future and how this is going to work. Even if you do finish, you may regret it or you may be relieved by it, either way only you know how you feel when you contemplate it. Plus, when you are discussing and he still doesn't change.. what does that tell you? Hope I helped =)

Try getting some music playing in the background, not so loud you can't hear yourself think but loud enough so you can both hear it. Music relives the stress of one on one conversations.
Also, as for smiling, say something like "I'm smiling" :P it might not sound good now, but it can be funny when worked into the conversation right.

Play some of her favorite "Love songs" in the backround, like there are some Oldies, that would be so romantic if (I had a Beau) playing in the backround while on the phone with him.....Such as "Yes I'm Ready" by Barbara Mason, or Some "Smokey Robinson" or "The Tempation's" or whatever kind of music that "Float's you guy's boat's " you know.. She would definately think you were alot on the "Romantic side", should you do this..... Good Luck, hun!! Smile!!!

have a deeper conversation - phone calls usually become longer when you're talking about something significant. jokes and stories of something stupid your friend did are fine, but if it's all your conversations consist of, then no wonder you run out quickly.

maybe your more comfortable talking to her face to face. you like the intimacy of it. keep the phone calls short. then talk your hearts out when you see each other.

Play with yourself during the call. That should spice things up a bit.
