Hrm, I used to change my printed menus (casual bar and grill) about every 6-8 months. But I always had daily/nightly specials, and a monthly special. If any of those went over really well in those 6-8 months, then they went on the new menu and I'd axe the "turds" (items that weren't selling often). I didn't want to change the menu too often, because certain items had a good reputation and regulars would always come for them.

It depends on the style of restaurant. It can be costly to change a menu. If the new menu doesnt fit the regular customers likes then they lose customers, and all the planning and training is wasted along with having to regain customers. If a restaurant has some top selling items they will be reluctant to take them off the menu in fear of losing business. There are restaurants that feature local foods, so their menus would change with the seasons and what is available to them. In chain restaurants, they are very reluctant to get rid of their staples because it will be too much change. McDs and BK will probably always have the Big Mac and Whopper on their respective menus. Just like going to an Applebees and always seeing certain dishes on their menu even if they bring out 4 or 5 new items and change the design of their menus. It rarely happens that an entire menu will change, unless thats the style of the restaurant.

This is an interesting question with a slightly complicated answer. It really depends on the restaurant. Corporate-run establishments, such as major chain restaurants (Friday's, Applebee's, etc.) tend to keep the best sellers as menu standards, while rotating out items that don't sell well, or don't yield a large profit. Items that are trendy, or things that fall into a category covered by some new, fad diet (think Adkins, South Beach, etc.) are often added as demand/interest grows, and are removed when the next new diet tells us that the old diet items are bad.
Things are slightly different at the privately owned businesses...because they can do whatever they want! Locally owned restaurants can change their menus daily (depending on what is available), weekly (depending on which employee is cooking), monthly (as the weather changes, or even seasonally. They may never have the same menu again, or it may contain several good-sellers/customer favorites, with only a few items changing.
Really, there is no set answer to your question, as it is, in the end, totally up to each individual establishment. My advice to you, is if there is a dish you favor at your local eatery and it gets removed from the menu...ask them to bring it back. Tell your friends to request it. Write a letter. Most times, if enough people ask for something, the restaurant will be concerned with losing money and on the next menu revision, they will return the item to the menu. Or they may make it a weekly special. And here is one last thing they don't want you to know...9 times out of 10, they can still make whatever it is! As long as the key ingredients are still kept in stock, your missing menu item/treasured dish can be prepared. Be sure to ask very nicely, and most importantly----DON'T FORGET TO TIP YOUR WAITSTAFF!

I think it all depends on the type of place it is, greasy spoons, MacDonald's, takeaways etc. never change their menus so they can be consistent. Whereas restaurants change their menus for a couple of reasons, 1 to keep the chefs interested and 2, to keep the customers interested, and they can change as often as everyday, or seasonally. I prefer menus which are changed, and printed daily because you know that the food is fresh.
Hope this was helpful to you.

1. I think restraunts /cafes change their menu about every 2-3 months.
2. I doubt that they wait that long to change their menu.Think of it this way,ya know all those food commercials you see on T.V., well those are NEW items that they have to ADD to their menu. So,pretty much they changed the menu once they added/took away something.
3.They probably would just add items into the menu for seasonal reasons.Like Santa cookies,Easter eggs that kinda stuff.
4.They probably would like a cheeseburger or hamburger since those are common items.
Hoped I helped you.
