In the name of Allah the most Gracious the most merciful.
I would like to answer this question from an Isllamic perspective.
The essence of our lives is to recogonise our creator the one
God almighty and worship him on his terms and conditions.
Allah the almighty tells us in the holy Quran that he created us
only to worship Him.Our Prophet muhammad peace be on him tolds us that we have to compare our lives to that of a
rider who has set off on a long journey to a particular destination and after a while he and his mount are exauhausted and so they stop for a while under the shade of
a tree before caring on.The life of this world is the period where we have stationed for a while before we go on to our
real destination and that is the life in the heareafter. The
successful person is the one who attains eaternal life in
paradise and the the most unsuccessful one is the one who
will be thrown into the fire of hell.
This life therefore is a test for the heareafter.God almighty
tells us that the road to hell is very easy put the path to parsdise is full of trials and tribulations.God the almighty looks
into our heart and then tests the level of our faith, with loss of
life , loved ones, loss of property and wealth , disasters,
calamities etc.Suffering brings us closer to god almighty and
is one way of washing away our sins.suffering teaches us to
have patience and submit ourselves to the will of Almighty
God by accepting wahtever He has decreed for us.

That is kind of hard for me to explain, but there is a lot that we can learn. I have suffered a lot just within the past couple of years and it has not diminished my faith at all. It has actually made my faith a lot stronger. It is amazing because even in the midst of suffering I have seen God at work in my life and others lives around me. I have come out of suffering with a better understanding of life, I have become a stronger person, I am more understanding and accepting of others, and when they go through things I am able to be there for them and I am able to share my story with others so that others can see what God has done in my life.

Haven't you ever heard that suffering builds character?

Well, I'm here to tell you that's a load of crap. I'm certain my character would be a lot stronger if I'd never experienced a lot of the suffering I've gone thru. In retrospect, I think frame of mind is the key. If one views it more as a challenge, it is easier to overcome. If I'd only known that earlier...

God allows us to go through suffering to help us to become stronger in our faith in him rather than in faith in our own abilities. When we get to the point where we can say "I am not in control God. I need you to help me", we are strengthened by his power and wisdom. God does not cause suffering but we suffer as the result of the natural world and our own choices. We suffer physically because our bodies are not the perfect creation that God made in the first place and the enviornment that we live in, the foods that we eat, our relationships etc. are all triggers that can make the body and or mind sick. Even with great faith, the statement made in the Bible to Adam and Eve has proven to be true. "If you eat of the fruit, you shall surely die." Man was originally created to live forever in health and contentment with no sickness or adversity but sin changed all of that.
