You can paint just about anything. Problem will be keeping it looking decent. Not sure why you are ruining expensive floors though.

I would not even try it. You could probably paint it if you use a good paint and primer but I have never been a fan of a painted floor. Every step you take on the floor would wear the paint away. Besides slate flooring is one of the most expensive and beautiful floor covering out there. I would suggest that you clean it with a solution of vinegar, baking soda and water. Check out your local home improvement store and get a slate sealer. Your slate floor will be gorgeous!

This is what I found on the net regarding a slate floor which had been painted. Hope the info helps.

At the suggestion of the painter, had him paint the slate floor in foyer black. He used all purpose enamel and a polyurethane coat. I know he cleaned floor first with a strong cleaner. Paint is chipping and marking very easily. He won't return my calls and I need to know what I can do to make it presentable. This job is only 2 months old and foyer has minimal traffic. I don't think a sealer of any kind was put down first. Can I do anything to keep it in tact at this point?

Slate is very soft, and I think painting it was a mistake. I happen to know a painter, though, who is also a tile setter. Log onto his site and post to his board.
