What ever happened to spanking?
My 4 year old is completely regular. Get in trouble a few times a day, testing the limitations of my patients. There have been plenty of times when I'm sure she shows signs of ADHD, she's freaking 4!!!
I am sick and tired of parents medicating their children to get them to "behave" or "act like normally". What is normal? Get off your butts you lazy moms and dads, and discipline your child, not medicate!!!
After years of time outs, spankings on the butt (I don't beat my kids, just one good swat thru the pants does the trick) and taking away all the good toys and even more imaginative punishments to deter bad behavior should drugs be considered. You are giving parents of the truly sick children a really bad name.

I saw this news item too and am disgusted as well. From what I got from it the parents just kept her on meds to keep her from mis-behaving. Why on earth would someone not report the problem? I cant imagine! Youre right, they said the teachers, everyone basically thought there was a problem but did anyone step up to save this child? I didnt hear that anyone called for help or anything. I was just talking with someone yesterday about how horrendous it is that just anyone can have kids. You have to get a license or register for nearly everything else, driving, voting, marriage but to bring another human being in the world and be responsible for them, no problem, its open to everyone!

I totally agree with you with this.
I'm a mother of 4 2 of each and my youngest son is 13 and is autistic with ADhD and aspergers syndrome and is a good hand full and only needs 5 hours sleep in any 24 hours the only time i get to myself is when he's at school and yes the dr's have tried giving me prescriptions for drugs to calm him down i said tried coz i won't give my son or any of my children drugs that wont help him they would only slow him down and make him sleep more, he also wets his bed most nights and the dr tried giving him a drug to stop the production of urine till i asked then what happens the his kidneys coz if the kidney don't do what it needs to do so as to stop his bladder filling up, i got no reply for that question, wonder why.
( yep that prescription got ript up )

Obviously you do not know anyone with ADHD. There is a very fine line between badly behaved children and children with ADHD. My nephew has it but he is nothing like these kids hanging out on street corners terrorising people etc, he just finds learning difficult, focusing on one thing at a time. Bad behaviour isn't the only side affect from this lonely illness. My nephew isn't badly behaved at all, he just can't control his excitement and can only express his feeling through anger. He is a very lonely child as no kids at school want to know him as he is excitable etc. A 'good pop on the butt' isn't the answer in this case. I think you should maybe research ADHD a little more rather than making comment from one article.

i agree with the fact that they shouldnt be given drugs so early. There is so much evidence that supports a change of diet being more effective - as obviously less sugar and e-numbers = less hyperactivity everyone knows this! I think most of it is to do with the childs surroundings and food habits, also how they are disciplined (or not). I would look at alternative therapies first, as the doctors are just pushing drugs because they get more money from the drug industries that way.

Totally agree with you on every level there. There was an story in the news a couple of months ago about this 4 year old who got diagnosed with depression, cause she didn't get into the school she wanted. I'm sorry but at that age she wouldn't have known much about it - unless her parents were moaning about it all the time and making the situation a big issue!! Parents should watch what they say in front of their children.

May I join your vent? My grandson has been on adderall for six months and just turned 7. It's true he's always been an active boy who never napped and had trouble focusing on things and sitting still. However, his behavior was not uncontrollable without drugs. His real problem was/is a lack of routine and lack of security. His mother does not concern herself with the effects of her actions on her children believing that they will not remember these years. Since he was 3, my grandson has had three stepfathers and at least that many "potential" stepfathers who lived in the same house with him. Of course, everytime mom suffers a break up so does her son. She's 24 just remarried and has her third baby. The 3 children all have different fathers. I've tried to discuss with her what's happening with the children and the result was that I wasn't allowed to see them for months. When I was allowed to see them again, my grandson was on adderall. I didn't recognize him! His mother got his dosage upped after my grandson got in trouble at school. He was mimicking his stepfathers actions. At any rate, I found out that she lied to the doctor when he asked if there were any issues in his life that might explain his behavior. She also purposely didn't give him his medication the day she took him to the doctor. I can't prove anything. Am I better off staying involved in their lives as much as I'm allowed?

It is so easy to label things now-a-days. When I was in Elementry school my best friend was diagnosed with "HyperActivity" and was placed on a special diet removing sugars.etc.....Today this is called ADD or ADHT and other names...Now with a prescription drug.
I am sure some children medically need to be treated for disorders etc... but I think we as americans are being "sold" on treatments to issues/problems that have always existed and/or are just traits within certain people. We are getting prescription and pill happy people.
I will be doing the best I can to raise my son in this ever changing/evolving society we live in. Whats was Taboo 10-20 yrs ago is now socially acceptable and commonplace.

The story isn't really a reflection on the children of today so much as it is on the parents of today. If parents would spend more time actually parenting they wouldn't be enticed into trying the many "quick fixes" that society, schools, doctors and drug companies likes to throw at us. Of course there are many sick children who need such medication but it's a lazy parent who prefers to diagnose instead of parent.

I totally agree, I try to do my best and keep my kids in line. Suppose I'm one of the lucky ones - everyone tells me how good they are..... but they have their moments too believe me.
I do think that people are too quick to want a label for the fact they cannot or will not discipline and control their kids themselves and these are the ones who blame everyone else for their failing.
Suppose it all comes down to costs as well as someone has to pay for all this medication being so easily distributed.
