I have been trying to figure that out myself. I get better treatment from atheists.

That's why its difficult to convert non-Christians to Christianity because of the word war they see between Christians. Why don't you guys who bash the Catholic faith try to convert Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus instead?
Peace and every blessing!

tebone I think Drake has answered your question very well, but could I say that the church as it was according to the early Christians we read about in the Bible is far removed from the Church you are speaking about.

The church you are referring to has added so much man made tradition to the simple gospel of Jesus Christ to make it barely unrecognisable when comparing it to what we read in the Bible.

I can provide a list of some of them, including the dates they were added to the Church you speak of should you wish

By the way the word church in the Bible does not refer to a denomination or even religion, it is the collective body of Christians.

Jesus placed nothing into the hands of Peter (check Drakes answer, saves me having to type it again) Jesus was simply referring to the declaration just made by Peter that Jesus was the Christ/Messiah/Annointed One, upon this is the Church built, not a mere man.

God can be blasphemed, The Holy Spirit can be blasphemed, Jesus can be blasphemed, but a group of people cannot.

I do not intend to sound harsh here, I am just trying to answer your question in a few words, if I have offended you, that was not my intention.

In the same chapter where you think Jesus places the Church into the hands of Peter (Matt 16), Jesus later calls Peter, Satan. Why do you think these statements are near each other?

Matthew 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Could the rock, the real fundamental building block of the church be the statement "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Remember Jesus Christ is called the cornerstone, not Peter.

Ephesians Chapter 2:19-21
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

I think you are a Catholic.
Jesus did not put the church into Peter's hands.
He did not found the church on Peter.
He founded the Church on the absolute truth the He was the Savior.
The Son of God.
You should read where it says it in Mathew.
Mat 16:15 He said^ to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
Mat 16:18 "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.

Have a wonderful day.

Because certain people (you included) have twisted the bible into what you believe. It is better to have an idea than a believe. You can change an idea it's harded to change a believe.

Inschool did you tell someone something and by the end of the day it was so screwed up from the original. Ok the bible has been translated for 2000 years. I think the real message has been lost.

The church became regularly occurring via his followers after his mortal dying. The Roman Catholic Church is one branch of Christianity. different early denominations contain the Orthodox Church (Greek Orthodox and separate eastern Orthodox) and the Coptic Church in Egypt. Protestant religions began interior the Roman Catholic Church yet separated from it.

the church is the mystical body of christ that you are borned into. You cannot join it. Jesus did not establish an organization, the devil(antichrist) did that.
the revelation of jesus christ and who he is is the rock that the church is built upon. Peter had that understanding which is what the Lord said the church is built upon, not peter.

Note the church history: apostles spread the message among the jewish population; saul of tarsus (paul) converted the non-jewish population. Christian communities were then in existence all over the place. To give order to this, local leaders (called Bishops) were elected to represent them. These Bishops would then meet together to discuss matters of faith, theology, etc. (basically, nailing down the core religious beliefs). The bishops of Rome felt that Rome's influence and ideas were more important than the others (kinda like a New York governor would feel w/ respect to the governor of Idaho). And so they began to wield more power and influence, even calling themselves 'father' (pope). It then worked out to where they did what everyone who wanted more power in those days does: they established a divine mandate for it by first maintaining the biblical directive ('on this rock...') and then relabeling the successive line of Roman bishops to be popes (!). kinda weird, huh? I was raised roman catholic and was surprised to learn this as well...

Jesus actually handed his lineage to James, but our western society it totally dominated by the church of Paul. Were does Peter come into this?

Maybe, you mean , why do people like myself refuse to go to any church and why do people like myself put down churches.

It is because, today's churches are dead. They read one little verse and then spend the next 30 minutes giving you their OPINION on that one little verse. The bible should be read as a book, and not in verses. The bible was written in books, not chapter and verse.

Also, today's churches have TOTALLY PERVERTED the word of God and Jesus. If you don't believe me , then test them. Turn on your Sunday TV and have a bible in your hand. Notice how they may read one single verse and not the other surrounding verses that would put it into context.

Not to worry............this is all part of the end times.
