In India a gun or any fire arm for personal defense requires proper license issued under section 3 of the Arms Act, 1959. If any one posses any fire arm as specified under the said act without a proper license can be prosecuted under section 25(1B) of the Act & can be punishment that can not be less then one years & can extend unto 3 years with fine. This is briefly the legal position, now where such arms you can get without license will not be possible for you to have legally, rest I have told you.

First the best home defence weapon is a 12 guage shotgun.
but licence depends on your state, many states require no license to buy any gun and only permits to carry a handgun, some states restrict every gun purchase.
** This is for the US

Depends where you live. Gun laws vary from state to state.
In NY, you don't need a license for a long gun (rifle or shotgun). Of course, you must be at least 18 years of age to buy a gun.
Obviously, a pistol is best if you are out and about. A 9mm or .40 S&W is a good choice.
For home defense, no better self defense weapon than a shotgun, such as the Remington 870 series:

Is this English? What country? Assuming you live in the US, most states/cities will allow you to purchase a gun without registering it. However, you will need to be permitted if you wish to carry it concealed (with the exception of Vermont). Check out www.packing.org for some helpful info.

You only need a license to purchase and own a gun in certain areas, like in Illinois, New York, etc. Check with your local authorities, or local gun shops and they can tell you about the law in your area.

There are plenty of handguns available for sell by individuals. Use cash. In the event you have to use it for self-defense, an unregistered handgun violation is small potatoes compared to the alternative.
Edit: If you're underage...better stick to pepper spray.

Except in a few countries like Afghanistan and USA, you need to get a license to buy and keep a gun almost everywhere on Earth.
In India the license application is submitted to the nearest police station.

It will depend upon what state you live in.
Go to a local gun store. They can advise you more appropriately.
