Does it seem improper, and should a wait until 18 to date someone in there 20's?

20 isnt bad but 23 is getting up there. Its not improper... just morally incorrect. But if it feels right then why not. Another year waiting wont change much. He'll be another year older too. Good luck.
And by the way, its statutory rape only if the person is 16 or under, and even that is just with a 4 years or over age limit.

In reality you should wait till you are 21 to date another person over 21. If you are not old enough to get into the bars, and this other person is.. that will create some issues. If the bar sceen is no biggie to this other person 18 is a good age, but I think 17 is still too young.

How long have you been 17?
There's nothing wrong with it in itself, but that's assuming you're both in it or the right reasons...
You need to ask all the usual things; Do you love each other? Is s/he what you want in a relationship? Do you have things in common and enjoy each others company?
If you're asking this question it seems you're unsure about the foundations of the relationship or maybe his intentions? Is s/he generally interested in YOU?
If you are not ready for a sexual relationship you may want to conider this... A 23 year old is probably used to certain parts of a relationship that maybe you don't want / aren't ready for and that's fine but if it's the case maybe you need to wait?
Only you can know the answer to this question i'm afraid...

Be close friends until you turn 18 (legal). That way, the 23 year old won't be accused of statutory rape (depending what state you are in).
Its less than a year till the 17 year old is legal, so I'd just be patient.

Legally, I think you should wait till the person turns 18. Emotionaly though I think you two are on the same level. (I know I was at 23) When I was 19 I dated this guy that was 16. I was so scared, that I asked (or begged) his parents not to press charges on me for seeing their son. They laughed, but I was serious.

Honestly to tell you the truth! Yes! It is too old! And even though it might seem like those two people are in love or whatever, they're really not, you loved someone before this person im sure! i know this because the guy I dated for like five years is sixteen (me too) and he cheated on me with a 24 year old and he doesn't kno which way to go, me or her, but i wont take him back, i've taken him back four times and im not gettin hurt anymore! But yes, that is too old! And im just tryin to look out for ya you know! I know how it feels, and how do you kno what that person does when you're not with them, which i kno that's really anybody! And plus that is so statatory rape!

Wait a year or have your parents approval before you start anything.
Age doesnt matter in the end, I am spending my life with someone 18 years older then me.
But believe me, family is more important until you KNOW the person is the one for you. And having your familys approval could make a relationship so much easier for you.

Not at all. Age is just a number.. it's what you feel that's important! When i was 17 my boyfriend was 21... i'm still with him now and love him very much! Go for it! Good Luck!

Legally, yes, it's too old.
Emotionally, yes, it's too old.
A 17 year old has only been sexually mature for a couple of years. A 23 year old has been sexually mature for at least seven years.
Something is out of balance there.
