I'm a teenager from the Philippines and my aunt (who lives in the States) asked me for a wishlist of things my sibs and I wanted since she's sending us a box of stuff. We're not that close, but I like her, and she's loaded with money. Not that I wanted to take advantage of her, but I asked for a digital camera, costing about $270. We're well off here in the Philippines, but gadgets are just waaay cheaper in the US. I emailed her about it, even offered to pay for part of it for etiquette's sake, but I just couldn't make up my mind on which camera to ask for. I emailed her about 3 times, sounding indecisive, then finally sent her my final choice of camera, the $270 one. She never replied, though. I was thinking, could she have been offended or found me too audacious? What would you guys have felt?

It's rather rude to ask for an expensive gift just because you think the giver is wealthy. You should make a list of things you want with price ranges form a few dollars upwards. Let her choose. You may think she has lots of money but often older people's wealth is tied up in their property and income may be low. Do not be offended at whatever you receive but make sure you thank her. You say you are not close. How would you feel if a distant relative emailed you and asked for expensive gifts? If I were you I would email her, thank her for her kindness and say that you will leave it to her to decide what to send but that whatever it is will be received with gratitude and thanks. Don't be greedy.

maybe you should have sent her a list of things you would like ranging from inexpensive to medium priced. i don't think putting a digital camera on the list is out of line as long as you gave her other choices.

I think it is ok, especially since you offered to pay for part of it, but she most likely won't make you pay for it since she already said it was going to be a gift. She may just be too busy to respond to you. I sometimes go several days without checking my email.

I would have been offended and found you too audacious. If you are worried about etiquette, you dont ask for expensive gifts, its just not the done thing.

I may have if I was not rich but on the other hand she may have simply not read your email or voice mail yet or may be busy and you are just being paranoid. Call her and ask her if it is ok and appologize if she thought it was expensive.

I really think it's a bit much. Let's say you had relatives living in poverty in India, they consider you rich living in Philippines, would you send them something worth 270dollars. If your answer is yes, OK. If no, well, you know how your aunt feels

well may be she feels offended. But it was you who expressed clearly what u wished and that is not at all wrong. What ever she may be thinking, it mus be due to some reason.May be she thinks you are after her wealth.Well i feel its better to give up the camera than to break your relationship with your dear camera. Please don't feel offended.I was just helping or suggesting you.I don;t blame you.Its nice to express our desires.
