Blindness after an anaesthetic can occur if the blood pressure falls too low during surgery, which results in the brain being deprived of oxygen (though it can resolve itself after a few days-weeks.) If his blood pressure fell low enough to cause blindness, I'd also be concerned about his kidney function.
If you haven't already, you need to speak to your vet about him, and keep an eye on your cat for signs like increased drinking and increased urination.
Hope he comes through it okay.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Any op carries a risk, the vet should really have talked to you about what happened. You're entitled to an explanation.
You could ask another vet for a second opinion, or ask your vet again.
During surgery the vets need a bright light to see what thy're doing, but our pets have lost the ability to close our eyes or contact our pupils while they're asleep.
Surgeons use an opaque cream and tape to keep our eyes closed, because staring at the light can cause blindness. Its possible that something went wrong there. Are his pupils wide open as if he's in the dark? Are the the same? Brain damage can cause one eye to look different from the other.
Hope you find out. Your cat is probably less distressed by his blindness than you are, my old dog went blind for the last two years of his life; but thats not much consolation to you.

That's a tragic outcome, for the cat and for you. I have known two cats who went blind. Their powers are remarkable. You should only let them into the garden, and accompany them. However, round the house they will live normal lives - so long as you don't move the furniture! You will find, in time, real wonder at their adaptability. Good Luck.

I'd certainly ask the vet about it, however the effects of anesthetics can cause death in the animals. My wife lost her Maine Coon to a simple neutering last year when he had a bad reaction to the drugs.
