I have been trying to install windows defender and I keep getting a window that says I have a problem with a correctly installed Windows Installer. The website I went to smacks of the whole thing being a scam.

Windows defender is a very poor program, just takes up room on your hard drive, but to be able to download it you must have SP2 on your computer if you cannot download SP2 then you cannot download window defender.
There are ways round this; have a look at a site called 9down.com

windows defender can be downloaded off of Microsoft's website . for free if you have a legal copy of windows , trying to download windows defender from 3rd party sites is risky , and would still require validation from Microsoft , and my guess is this is where your issue is , because you not running a legal copy of windows
