If you can't afford a big wedding, why have one? Why get in debt or bum money from family for a 1 day event. You should have a small wedding and not spend much money. The most important thing about getting married is what is the heart, not what you do on the day. Best of luck to the both of you.

If you guys want to get married thats all that matters. The money from your mom will come into good use. Just ask your dad and be prepared for the answer....the worst that will happen is that he says no. So then you know where you stand. His parents will get over it if you guys want to be married....its really not a big deal. I am getting married this July and I am not done with school either....its not where you are in life to be married....its who you are with. It's not like once you are married your life stops. Marriage is not all about being financially stable, finshed with school, or anything else...its about being together for the journey. Good Luck and CONGRATS!!

Take your father out to dinner with no expectations. Tell him that you are planning the wedding and were wondering if he can help you out with some of the expenses. It's always awkward to ask for money, but you can't plan the wedding unless you know what assistance you're getting. . . and to be honest, if you don't know if you can count on your parents, don't plan anything until that check has been cashed.
And unless Dad is a multi-millionaire holding out on you, please don't hold it against him if he can't contribute.

You don't ask them for money.
IF anything, say "if you want to donate any money, we'd appreciate it, but it is not needed". But don't say "hey give us some money".
It would be wise to save up and pay for the wedding yourselves. Just don't go into debt or take out a loan. No need to start a marriage already in debt.

I wanted a nice catered wedding, but my fiance and I could not afford it. We decided to wait and save as much money as we could. Then my parents came to me and asked if it would be ok to use a cheaper reception hall, one where we could use our own catering instead of having to use theirs, and then use friends and family to do the food. She said this would save everyone thousands of dollars in the long run, and her and Dad could help us out more.
We opted to go for this route.
My suggestion to you is to wait until you've finished school and are able to save money.

Why are you getting married BEFORE you graduate college? Sounds like it will be a LOT easier to hit your families up for money after you've proven to them that can handle the 4-year commitment of college before making the lifelong commitment to each other.

When you tell them about the wedding, just say "We plan to pay as much as possible ourselves, but wanted to see if you will be able to contribute anything"
As long as you aren't being too extravagant, you can tell them ways you are saving money on the costs and how much your budget is. Remember that they are not obligated; if they aren't willing or able to contribute, just scale down your plans.

Traditionally the brides parents pay for the wedding, not the groom's parents. We got married in city hall, and cost about 25 dollars. None of the hypocritical clergy would marry us, as they only would perform ceremonies for their slavish followers.

Wait until he (bf) gets a job and is financially stable then you won't have to ask your parents for money. :)
