I have to give pst exemption to embassy employees and then they don't even tip. She says she has no cash as a $20 is staring up at me. I pointed out the option of adding the tip to her VISA and she said it costs to much, I'll have to catch you later. The government pays for those lunches. It would not hurt the lady with the big paycheck to tip like a regular Canadian. I provided excellent service and was greatly insulted by her lack of manners.

For the record, I never asked for a tip, she brought it up, I just informed her of the option available on Visa. For all you people that think i get paid well. I get $6.75 an hour. Ignorance is not an excuse.! Perhaps the Canadian government should stop assuming that all people tip!

It is a personal choice to tip. I don't think there is a right answer but I hope to expand the publics' views toward tipping. We, as servers, make below minimum wage and work hard to make your dining experience a pleasant one, it is greatly appreciated when our service is complimented. I am not money hungry, just appreciate common courtesy and respect. Some people just don't know how to give it. And I consider a verbal compliment on the service appreciation. It's not just showed by cash tips. Some people just cannot afford to tip, I used to be one of them. If i have a table with kids, I give excellent service regardless of whether or not I recieve a tip. I love kids and i know how costly it is to raise them.

Tipping is part of the waitresses pay. That is something that customers rarely understand. In my town waitress starting pay is $3.01 an hour!

If I were in your case I would simply refuse to serve her, have the hostess seat her at a different table. She is stealing your services. Tipping is not just etiquette, it's the completion of a contract between the customer and the waitress. The waitress brings whatever the customer wants, sometimes making several trips and the customer pays for ithe service. You would not go to the hairdreeser and not tip, you would not have a newspaper delivered to your home and not tip the delivery person, and you should not forget to tip your waitress.

Perhaps you could have your employer post that any pst exempt bill will have a 15% automatically added to the charges for their convenience. They don't have to pay their parking tickets or live by our laws, the least they can do is pay their server!!

i see your point. i thnk they should have to tip. why do i tip? because i have managed restaurants and kitchens for a long time and this is where i get annoyed. the government is buying these idiots lunch and they cant even cough up a few bucks, that is a load of crap. they have no idea that most places make you split your tips with the busser, hostess, expoditer, bartender, and the kitchen staff. also if the tip pool is based on your sales then when you get stiffed you end up having to pay out of your own money. also most servers are in school, single parents or this is a second job because they cant make ends meet. sorry, i know what it is like to provide excellent service and get nothing for it. some people are just rude.

I have been in food service for 20 + years and I have NEVER asked for a tip. Some people believe that the owners of the establishment should pay their employees enough so they don't have to depend on tips to survive, but that's not going to happen, and they aren't going to tip you no matter how good of service you give them. It is extremely rude to point out that they can add the tip to their Visa card unless they ask you about it.

In some countries tipping is not a custom.
One example is China.
part of the problem is you are dealing with foreigners and probably not of european influence.
Your owner Should explain to them that they are expected to tip in your country as the waiters and waitresses depend on those tips to pay bills.
The other option is to add the tip to the bill.
If they refuse he should tell them they are no longer welcome to the restaurant.

In your case, you should receive tips but don't feel bad if the customer didn't give you because its their rights to give you or not. You just felt bad, let it past. You'll have other customers who'll give you.

i think everyone should tip a waiter, regardless of tax status.

Edit: (Although I think it's rude for a waitress to ask for a tip when someone is paying for their meal.)

Hey its her perogative to act like a meiser, Its largely society's fault to teach her that the waitress IS ALREADY PAID to do her job, tipping is just ridiculous.
