all right so i've got a video i want to use in windows movie maker. but i only want a clip. so i tried to split the video but the 2nd one it makes just turns out as audio. can anyone let me know how to create clips with the actual visuals being there and also perhaps how to get rid of the sound on a clip so that there is just video left?

thanks in advance!

I don't know how to split the video and all that yet but I do know how to take the audio out of it. At the bottom of the program to the left you will see a button that says either storyboard or timeline. If it says storyboard click it over to timeline. There you should see several tracks: Video, Transition, Audio, Audio/Music, and Title Overlay. Look down your audio line and you should see a white oblong shape where there is audio (it may be really small). Click on it then right click and click on volume, then click on mute clip. Hope you get it worked out.

what is the video format? avi....mp4...mov?

some avi files on windows movie maker do not support video/audio...you could try downloading a converter from avi to a format that is also accepted on windows movie maker.
