When I flew back from calgary to Detroit three years ago, I remember someone being really upset because something they wanted to carry on was not permitted. It had to do with sporting goods (maybe hockey sticks or ski poles...) It was too late to have the item checked... so be smart and find out so you dont have to trash can your purchase at the gate!!!
... and GO WINGS !!

Don't send it through post!!!? What was that guy thinking!? That would cost way too much.

Just take it to the ticket counter at the airport and the agent will let you know if you can carry it on or if you need to check it.

Yes, most carriers will even allow you to carry it on, since it can be readily stowed in overhead compartments. They will advise you accordingly on check-in.

You should be able to check it without problems.

I think you'll need to put it in as checked baggage.
