Really, no one knows what causes bipolar disorder. Sure, there's a list of things that could one or all contribute to it, but finding out in a specific case is generally impossible. Things such as genetics, "crossed" neurotransmitters in the brain, stress, and numerous other factors should be considered. Additionally, studies have determined that approximately 0.5% of children are affected by BP as well, so it's possible that school and television could also be included in this list.

Bipolar Disorder (also known as Manic-Depression) is a mental illness that is heriditary, caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. A person with Bipolar Disorder goes through Depression and Mania phases which can be mixed, and they can have many psychological symptoms including but not limited to: Depression (low mood, hopelessness, loss of desire in pleasurable activities, tend to sleep more, loss of appetite, anxiety, confusion, etc.) and Mania (high mood, hallucinations, irritability, decreased need for sleep - trouble sleeping, tend to make irrational decisions, etc.)

Bipolar Disorder does not have a cure, but it CAN be treated, and someone with Bipolar Disorder can live a fullfilling life.

Bipolar disorder is a mental disease where the person gets different emotional states. It can be feeling extremely good (maniac phase: so happy you think you are invincible) at some time and extremely low (depressive phase: so sad you want to get suicide) at other. You can get this cycles fast (change every week) or slow (months could go by). It could be type 1 or 2 depending on the intensity of the happiness and sadness. Everyone should get treated.
The cause: it seems to be an alteration of the neuron conduction, altered chemicals in the brain. It is heritable.

While there are many biological factors associated with mania and depression, none of them has been proven to be a cause or to be diagnostic of bipolar disorder.

At least 50% of people with bipolar disorder have a parent with a mood disorder, most often major depressive disorder. A person has a 30% chance of inheriting a mood disorder if one parent has bipolar disorder, and a 60% chance if both parents have it. Research has found an even greater risk among twins, especially identical twins, who have a parent with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder, once known as manic-depression, is a psychiatric diagnosis referring to a mental health condition defined by periods of extreme, often inappropriate, and sometimes unpredictable mood states.

Flux is the fundamental nature of bipolar disorder. Both within and between individuals with the illness, energy, mood, thought, sleep, and activity are among the continually changing biological markers of the disorder. The diagnostic subtypes of bipolar disorder are thus static descriptions—snapshots, perhaps—of an illness in continual change, with a great diversity of symptoms and varying degrees of severity. Individuals may stay in one subtype, or change into another, over the course of their illness. The DSM V, to be published in 2011, will likely include further and more accurate sub-typing (Akiskal and Ghaemi, 2006).

Genes/heredity, and a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Bipolar, also known as Manic Depression, is where you get real highs, followed by the lowest of lows. It is not something to play with--get medical attention asap.
