Hi,
On 29 May 1453, Sultan Mehmed II “the Conqueror”, entered Constantinople after a 53–day siege and the city was promptly made the new capital of the Ottoman Empire.
And then, Constantinople's name changed to Istanbul.
Istanbul means "εις τήν Πόλι(ν)" (/is tin boli/) "To City and in the City".
Regards

Constantinople is a Greek name meaning the city of Constantin
Istanbul is a name given by Turks out of a Greek expression
The Greeks refereed to Constantinople saying εις την Πόλιν to the city "is tin polin" Turks took this expression and made one word Is-tan-bul Istanbul

Because Constantine, who was the ruler of Turkey, changed the name Istanbul to Constantinople. But, when he wasn't the leader anymore, the people changed it back to Istanbul.

Leonarda, Tolis and Tanju explained it. In those days "city" meant Constantinopolis (once in Cyprus city meant Nicosia, the capital). All the other cities/towns were irrelevant. There was just one "city", so to speak. Therefore, in Greek "stin poli" = in the city became Istanbul in Turkish.
In fact, when the Ottoman Turks conquered it in the 15th century, they called the city "Konstantiniyye", meaning the place of Constantin, the emperor who rebuilt the city after a great fire had destroyed most of it.
Today, fanatical Greeks use the name Constantinopolis to agitate Turks and implying that they will take it back. In return, thos Turks, whose national feelings are hurt by this, reply by saying it is Istanbul since 1453.
It is just silly of course to discuss such things in the 21st Century. As Shakespeare once said in Romeo and Juliet, "what's in a name? wouldn't a rose still same the same if it weren't called a rose?"
