George Carlin is a gifted comic. You should really give him credit when you use jokes from his act.

Why do they sterilize the needle when giving a lethal injection?

The joke comes from George Carlin in his "You are all diseased" album 1999

A long time ago a doctor would reuse needles and even sharpen them himself. Nowadays, all needles come in pre-packed sterile packages.

A good reason to use a sterile needle when giving a lethal injection is that there is a very small chance of an accidental needle stick to the person administering the injection.

First the needle come that way.
Second it needs to sterile for the person
doing the injection for the remote chance
he or she might stab him or herself.
Third, if the governor is a little slow about
his or her commutation of the sentence to life, the
subject isn't infected by the needle.

To make sure that person administered is killed by the poison rather than some other cause which could lead to litigation by the family of the victim.

Still, I get your point. The purpose is to kill a person and morally, the actual cause may well a moot point for most supporters of the death penalty.

Why not?
Just cuz you're gonna kill a person doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated with respect.
Why feed a person before killing them? Same difference,, or why provide them with shower or clean clothes? gonna kill them anyways right? It's all about respect, they may not act like it but they are human.
But can you even buy un-sterile needles?

Because there may be a last-minute reprieve and, if the prisoner is infected by the needle, they could sue.

Ummm, why would they de-sterilize the needle? Just because he's an inmate?

Needles just come sterile

It is politically correct to do so. Wouldnt want to be viewed as cruel by injecting any germs.
