How about Port Douglas in Far North Queensland???

Its on the beach...one of the best in Australia actually (Four Mile Beach), very, very, very laid back (they protested against McDonalds building there and won!!!), and very bohemian like with regular markets and just an overall good vibe in the town...

i lived in Cairns for 20+ years and my friends and i would often drive up to Port for the weekend...

check out Port Douglas in a search..i think that you'll find it has everything that you are looking for...

I say Agnes Water, north of Bundaberg, if you have transport and in the building game or have a coxswain ticket to work the barrier reef.

Laid back, remote, rural, beachy, coastal town, Queensland's most northern surfing beach, gateway to the southern barrier reef from town of 1770.

Remote, own transport a must, 130kms to Bundaberg.
