Rawhide has absolutely ZERO nutritional value. But is great for chewing if you watch your dog closely and dont let them swallow any or large amounts.
Rawhide swells when wet and has been known to cause intestinal blockages in dogs. A painful ailment and an expensive vet trip!
If your dog likes to chew, y not a flavored nylabone? Or even better yet, raw meaty bones. Such as beef soup bones or ox tails? Great for you dogs teeth and much more nutritional and Im sure delicious than rawhide. Good luck!!

This can be a controversial topic. I give my dogs rawhide treats because they chew them up well and the chewing activity relaxes them (it releases endorphins). A lot of people don't give them because they are concerned about the rawhides causing blockages (which has been known to happen in some dogs but I don't think it's that common). Also, some people (and this bothers me too) are concerned about what the rawhides might be contaminated with. I have heard that there is some evidence of pesticide contamination, but have never actually seen documentation of this. I weigh the benefits against the risks and go ahead and give them to my dogs.

Some people love to give rawhide to their dogs. I will not anymore. But of coarse I had the very large vet bill to stop me from giving these. My beagle ended up with the blockage. The vet told me when the dog chews the rawhide it gets all soft but as it moves though the body it hardens up again and thats what can cause the blockage. And worse like it cut her intestines. The choice is up to you to make the decision for your dog. I have found there are alot of other things to get. Pigs ears, kong ball. And its not that uncommon, my vet said he sees about 20 cases a year. Thats a lot since I live out here in rural county newfoundland. I would talk to your vet and see what he has to say. Good luck to you and your dog

I occasionally give rawhide treats to my dogs, with no problems.
Just be careful about the source- as the person above said, some rawhide can be contaminated with various chemicals, and it can rarely cause intestinal obstruction. If in doubt, stick with something like a nylabone. Be careful with natural bones- even raw bones are pretty good at causing obstructions, and can also cause tooth fractures (stick to things like chicken necks, which are softer).

i give my jrt/chi mix rawhide but i have noticed that natural bone has been a much better investment for me and him, they last forever and he loves to chew on them, they are pretty large so i dont have to worry about choking, his favorite is a penut butter filled hoof...good luck

My dogs like them, but I was told by my vet not to give them to my dogs because they get all slimy and get bacteria on them. I still use them, just the smaller ones that don't hang aroung long.
