cold calling is the processing of approaching prospective clients, typically via telephone, who have not agreed to such an interaction. The word "cold" is used because the person receiving the call is not expecting the call or has not specifically asked to be contacted by the sales person. It is often very frustrating and difficult for those making cold calls because they are often rebuffed, hung-up on and rejected by those receiving the calls. It could be said that it is equally frustrating for the person receiving the cold call, since they expected something they care about, and instead get a marketing pitch. They may also have been doing something important, such as eating dinner, or waiting for another phone call.

A cold call is contacting someone with whom you don't have an existing business relationship. They aren't expecting your call and your goal is to get their interest in your business or service, which hopefully would lead to a formal pitch. Very rarely do cold calls turn into business opportunities.

When a salesman calls someone at random - not someone who's joined a company mailing list or otherwise expressed interest in said company - to try to make a sale.

When a marketing executive sums up his daily calls at the end of the day (the clients he visited) , he categories the call in there 3 parts

Hot- (best chances of this customer interested in the product and need to be follow up soon or at the date of appointed)

Warm call - interested but maybe later.

Cold Call .. customer not interested, chances of buying is very less

A "cold call" is one you have to go out and find on your own. It means there are no leads you have to find it yourself.
Good Luck.
