I agree with the other two answers.
Honesty is the best policy, most (not all, but most) people can see through most lies from sales people.
Shake the persons hand, and give a warm, not cheesy, smile.
Listen to the customer, do not pressure the customer, all this 'it's a special offer only for today' business, may result in a few sales, but you will ultimately get more business through trust and word of mouth from happy customers.
You have to know the product inside and out. if a customer asks you a question and you say..Err...or Umm..they will not have much trust in you or the product.
Politeness goes a long way. Please, thank you etc costs zero, and will earn you not only sales, but respect.
Good luck.

Sales people are born, not made. You can take someone with the right material and turn them into a great sales person, but it is like coaching Jordan to play Basketball...he always had it in him.
There is no one thing, but a combination of things.
If I am recruiting a sales person the most important factor is they desire to help people to solve problems.
The most important internal factor is being self motivated and have the ability to bounce back from rejection.

When I'm buying I need to trust and like the salesperson and feel confident that I'm getting what I want, and the quality I want for the price I'm paying. So yeah, honesty and friendliness and if your product has any salt it will sell itself. I always like it also when the sales person tells me what this product will do for me to enrich or enhance my life.

Get the confidence of the buyer.
If he likes you,you know about the iceboxes and Eskimos.
See what he needs or is shopping for and work and convince him you can give him the best deal.
From there you can screw him and he won't come back or make a friend and have a steady customer.
