The reason cats purr and how they purr is one of life's great mysteries.
I've seen several documentaries, read studies and talked to my Vet about it and they all say the same thing.
People can GUESS as to why and how a cat purrs, but NOBODY can give a definitive answer.
A cat will purr when it's happy, BUT a very sick or dying cat will also purr to comfort itself.
The purring even when sick or dying comes from long before they were our house pets.
When they were in the wild they didn't dare show that they were ill, because they'd become the prey instead of the predator, that instinct is still in our little house cats today.
Edited to add: I'm not in any way saying that your kitten is sick, I'm just saying that there are many different reasons why a cat purrs.

Cats purr for many reasons. Most times they purr when they are content and happy. Kittens purr (and knead) to stimulate milk from their mothers. They also purr during tense or traumatic moments. When suddenly and violently injured, even at moments near death, a cat will often purr - almost a self-healing effort.
From your description, I would say that your kitten is bonding with you (its new mother). You are not causing him stress! Pet him and hold him on your lap. The human-feline bond is never quite so close as when a person is holding and petting a purring, vibrating bundle of fur on her lap, and all is well with the world. You may even find yourself purring in response.

i read that cats purr as a sign that they are comfortable with you approaching them. in the majority of cases this will be beacuse they're happy but in some odd cases it can be if they are ill/need help, they are showing that they want you to approach it in order to help it.
I'm in no way saying you cat is ill, you'd notice if it was purring because it was ill, it'd show other symptoms. So don't worry, you're not stressing your cat out, enjoy it! Cuddle up on the sofa together :)

A way of expression. Mostly contentment. A deep purr means they're in pain though like my cat did when she was in labor. Here's some info on it.

Oh he loves you. Cats purr when they are happy and contented. If he wasn't his little tail would be swaying from side to side. The complete opposite to a dog. A dog growls when he is scared and wags his tail when he is happy. A cat is the opposite.

It means it's comforted by your presence. He misses you, and feels happy and safe in his environment. If he starts sleeping on his back, as well, it'll mean he's at total ease with you and is completely relaxed.

he's not sad or scared at all! purring is a cat's simple way of showing affection. purring also shows the kitten is happy. in your case, when he(or she) is around you, he's happy. trust me on this, i have a cat myself. :-D
