i finally got a tiler to do the floor in my hall and kitchen. he arrives and gets set up to start working, while i go to work.

he rings 15 minutes later and says that he cant lay the tiles in a brickwork pattern as the floor is uneven, he can only lay them square to eachother. i'm thinking surely it doesnt matter what way you lay them, the floor is still uneven? plus its a new concrete floor.

so he rings me back 15b minutes later and says "all your tiles are different shades mate, i cant lay them as itll look awful. there are 5 different shades of tile here". so i tell him not to lay them. he leaves for another job.

later i get home to look at my dodgy tiles only to find that not a single tile has been taken out of the box.

what you think? should i just lay them myself and save 300 quid?

Measure from the walls and start in the middle and work, out ward but make sure you measure the tiles so you dont end up with say a very thin tile at the edge of the room.

He doesn't have to open any boxes to know if the tiles are different shades. On the outside of every tile box are a series of numbers printed on the box. These numbers are size, style, color and shade. Not always in that order.
As far as the floor being unlevel, I would agree, and I have never seen your house. New houses are being built by a contractor not an architec, the labor is usually sub-standard. However a good tile setter can overcome these problems.

You can lay the tiles yourself or get more estimates to have it done. Hopefully you haven't paid the other "tiler" any money. At least now, you can show any new tiler the tiles and the surface they are going onto so there shouldn't be any more "ring-ups".

Hey, to save some money why not! :P It could be a Saturday activity. Just lay em out and chill! ^_^ Get some lemonade and party with the tiles! :P
