As well as the obvious, caring, loving being kind, respect etc etc I think understanding that relationships change is important. After time, you may lose the butterflies in the stomach and excitment but it is replaced with so much more, a deeper, comfortable love. As I have got older I have learnt this - when I was younger I thought that once the initial excitement had worn off, things were over - how wrong I was.

Honesty and trust are the most important of all in any relationship. All other things are secondary. Of course, having fun with a good sense of humor is also very necessary.

Really knowing each other well and still liking each other even though you know all their bad traits.
Then you care for them and you want them to be happy, even if their happiness takes you out of the picture.
And make time for each other. Make sure you both show your appreciation towards each other; don't take them for granted.
